Intro to Radiation Safety Training Course (8 hours)

This foundational course provides essential knowledge on the principles of radiation safety, including understanding ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, radiation detection methods, and regulatory compliance. Participants will learn best practices for minimizing radiation exposure in various environments.

Key Highlights:

  • Radiation in every day life

  • Radiation units

  • Understanding different types of radiation

  • Radiation interactions with matter

  • Radiation protection principles

  • Radiation survey instruments

  • Safety measures in handling radioactive materials

  • Regulatory standards and compliance

Radiation Safety Officer Refresher Training

This 8 hour Radiation Safety Officer Refresher course is for Radiation Safety Officers, Assistant Radiation Safety Officers and others who need a technical refresher course. Topics to be covered include a review of radiation fundamentals, regulations, instruments, licensing, amendments, audits, dosimetry, training, wastes, decommissioning, emergency response, and maintaining a radiation safety program.

Following the course instruction a session will discuss lessons learned from various incidents in both industrial and medical settings. This will be an opportunity to openly discuss radiation safety issues, regulatory compliance, license violations and share experiences.

Gamma Calibration Training

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This training course provides instruction on the calibration of gamma radiation reference fields in accordance with ISO 4037-2019, and the calibration of gamma radiation instruments in accordance with IEEE/ANSI N323 AB-2013 and ANSI N42.17A-2003.

OBJECTIVES: As a result of this course you will be able to:

Day 1

  • Identify and review the equipment necessary to conduct gamma source calibration in detail.

  • Understand the requirements for calibration of gamma radiation fields.

  • Identify and understand the radionuclides suitable for gamma calibration and their characteristics.

  • Understand detector and instrument positioning in relation to the irradiator / calibrators radioactive source.

  • Understand the requirements of ANSI N323 AB and ANSI N42.17A.

Day 2

Setup and calibration of gamma radiation reference field using the customers source (electrometer and ion chambers supplied by ATOM SPEC). This is hands on instruction designed to teach the individual how to perform the calibration and collect radiation measurement data.

  • Utilize equations to generate a curve fit.

  • Estimate uncertainties.

DURATION: 1 day of classroom training and up to 2 day(s) of hands on instruction performing calibration of gamma radiation reference fields and instruments. The duration of the course can be extended based on the customers requirements.

Radiation Safety Officer Training (40 hours)

Personnel responsible for radiation safety activities are faced with numerous administrative and technical issues. These issues are often complex and require individuals who are well trained in radiation protection and have a solid understanding of regulatory requirements. To assist those individuals who desire a successful radiation safety program, ATOM SPEC conducts a five-day Radiation Safety Officer training course.

This 5 day course introduces participants to relevant issues that influence the effectiveness of a radiation safety program. The course emphasizes a variety of administrative and technical issues that a radiation safety officer has to address. An interactive format offers the opportunity for instructor/group discussions to facilitate the learning process.

Sealed Radioactive Source Training

A comprehensive radiation safety course that discusses the different type and uses of sealed radioactive sources, specific source characteristics,  safety and control measures, regulations, reporting, and leak testing.

The instructor will lead trainees through sealed source test requirements per ANSI N43.6 / ISO 2919, interpretation of sealed source certificates, reference dates, and recommended working life, leak testing, and more.

Case studies of radiation accidents and emergencies will be presented and discussed with participants as well as the safety and security of Category 1 and 2 sources (10 CFR Part 37).

This half day 4-hour course is conducted onsite or virtually.

Beta Calibration Training

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This training course provides instruction on the calibration of beta-particle radiation reference fields in accordance with ISO 6980.

OBJECTIVES: As a result of this course you will be able to:

Day 1

  • Identify and review the equipment necessary to conduct beta source calibration in detail.

  • Understand the requirements for reference beta-particle radiation fields at the calibration distance. This covers standard test conditions, energy of the reference fields, shape of the beta-particle spectrum, and uniformity of the dose rate.

  • Identify and understand the radionuclides suitable for beta calibration and their characteristics.

  • Describe and understand correction factors.

  • Understand the procedure and methodology for performing a Series 1 calibration.

  • Explanation of absorbed dose calculation methods of some of the corrections applied to the measued currents.

Day 2

Perform a Series 1 reference radiation field calibration (with filters) using either a mid or high energy beta sources at the reference distance and determine the reference beta particle absorbed dose rate.

DURATION: 1 day of classroom training and up to 2 day(s) of hands on instruction performing calibration of beta radiation reference fields per ISO 6980.
